walkingHere is a taster of the itinerary for the trip to Malawi specially designed for the Society (subject to minor changes and please note the photos below are not specific to this trek).

Day 1-2 Travelling London to Malawi

Day 3 Begin trekking in the Mulanje massif to the Madzeka Hut. We drive from Blantyre to the Mulanje region. At Lujeri Tea Estate we meet our porters and sign into the national park. We then follow a pleasant path which begins by traversing beautifully cultivated fields of maize, before entering a forested ravine which climbs quite steeply to reach the Madzeka Hut where we camp. (4-5 hours hiking /7km)

hutDay 4 Trek to the Thuchira Hut
We traverse around the eastern rim of the range to the Chinzama hut which is beautifully situated within the heart of the mountain, close to the source of the Ruo River with stunning views. There are pools within 5 minutes of the hut which are ideal for cooling off. The well marked route follows a generally level path through some of the best scenery in the massif, reminiscent of the Highlands of Scotland. We stay in Thuchira Hut which looks out over Elephant Rock and the Malawian plains.(4-5 hours hiking /16km)

wildlife Day 5 Trek to the Chisepo Hut and climb Sapitwa
From the Thuchira Hut we trek through delightful open country with several small rivers to cross. Some of these have pools which are ideal for washing and swimming, and the water is not too cold either! The scenery has high rolling peaks and wide open valleys. After 2 hours walking we reach the new Chisepo Hut at the base of Sapitwa, the highest mountain in Central Africa.. The optional ascent to the summit takes about 3 hours and about the same to descend. The route is a scramble in places and on a clear day the summit views extend across into neighbouring Mozambique.
(2 hours to the Chisepo Hut / 6km plus 6 hours for the optional ascent of Sapitwa / 5km)

mountainsDay 6 Trek from Chisepo Hut to Lichenya Hut
From Chisepo the path undulates and then contours around high above the valley until we reach the pleasantly situated Lichenya Hut. The hut is perfectly nestled at the base of Chilemba Peak (4-5 hours /10km)

viewDay 7 Trek from Lichenya Hut to Nessa. From the Lichenya Hut we have an early start to descend through beautiful forests. The route crosses streams and goes through thick groves of cedars before eventually emerging into cultivated fields of maize and pineapples. We are met by our vehicles and then transfer around the massif to Mulanje District. (3 hours hiking /10km)

view Day 8 Today we visit the FOMO project at Mulanje (Friends of Mulanje Orphans). This charitable organisation helps some of the many children in Malawi that have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS.

Day 9 Drive to Lake Malawi
Today we drive via Zomba to our final night camping on the shores of beautiful Lake Malawi. There will be a chance to swim in the turquoise waters of the lake before an evening lakeside barbeque.
