Autism Advisory and Consultancy Service

The service has two strands: an advisory service for people with autism and their families and carers, and consultancy for voluntary and statutory agencies needing specialised autism information and training. We employ six community support workers who work across Scotland.

We offer :
Autism assessment & observation
Tailored planned interventions
Specialist autism assessment
Development of autism learning outcomes
Development of good autism practice within the home

Our work includes:

Autism Video Guidance
This is an intensive technique involving a series of videoing and feedback sessions, aiming to increase staff awareness of how they interact with service users and to develop skills in this vital area. We have used this process with parents and children with autism and can adapt it to fit various scenarios.

Autism Counselling
Our qualified counsellor, who is also an experienced practitioner in the field of autism, offers an approach which is particularly suitable for individuals with Asperger syndrome. An initial six sessions enable the Counsellor to assess the individual's ability to access this form of support. A full report is then prepared containing recommendations regarding future counselling needs.

Adolescent and Adult Psycho Educational Profile (AA PEP)
The AA PEP Assessment allows us to assess an individual's level of functioning in different areas and in different contexts. The outcome can be used to influence individual programmes of care, activity and learning. This assessment is not suitable for individuals with high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome. Staff conduct this assessment and feedback both verbally and in report form to the staff group oncerned. Further involvement can be arranged to assist staff in the implementation of the assessment's outcomes. Training is available for up to 30 staff members and is tailored to individual requirements.

Autism Practice Consultancy
This service is for organisations providing direct services to individuals with autism. Our experienced and qualified staff provide person-centred training around the needs of individuals. This involves observation and working alongside staff and individuals. Further training and consultancy is based on the individual needs. This is likely to include highlighting issues of communication, behaviour, care-planning and skills development. This service can be linked to generic training or to individual assessment and ongoing involvement can be negotiated.

Aberdeen: Advisory and Consultancy Services exist in the Aberdeen area in conjunction with Aberdeenshire Council.
