The Abbie Resource
Based in Abercrombie Street, Glasgow, the Abbie Resource offers an inovative and individualised day service seven days a week
for adults with autism. We can accommodate clients with a wide a range of needs and devise individual strategies which maximise each person's potential.
All programmes of support are assessed and adjusted to set realistic purposeful goals to empower the individual to realise their potential.
Social Skills
Support with socialisation is essential for the development of the individual with autism. Skills are developed through community integration and a full programme of social experiences.
Educational Skills
A structured programme of education is available, tailored to the needs of the individual. The individual's timetable may include basic education, numeracy, computer work, communication skills and various educational projects.
Practical and Recreational Skills
Individuals with autism often benefit from support in the development of practical skills. This can include art and craft projects as well as learning and support in practical domestic or occupational skills. Support in the use of appropriate leisure and recreational opportunities may be required. The importance of a regular regime of exercise and physical activity is recognised in the provision of a healthy lifestyle.
Advocacy
Support with advocacy is built into every activity. For some this may include support with making meaningful choices. Within each centre activity, individuals are encouraged to develop problem solving skills. An important aspect of the service is the involvement of the service users in the development of the service and the promotion of the individual's self-esteem through successful and positive experiences. Consequently the development of the service will be led by the demonstrated needs and interests of the service-user.
Challenges
Every person with autism faces a range of significant challenges on a daily basis. The service aims to support the individual and provide challenges, which are enjoyable, fulfilling and developmental. New experiences must be planned and carefully introduced. Progress can be slow and goals must be achievable, realistic and of value to the individual.
Communication Skills
Support with the development of communication skills are a feature of everyday activity and opportunity within the service. Where appropriate, supplementary communication systems will be used to enhance the ability for the individual and staff to communicate with each other.
